John,
Yesterday, former EMILYs List president Sen. Laphonza Butler (CA) delivered her Senate farewell address, and we want to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude for her groundbreaking leadership in Congress over the past 13 months. She brought much-needed strength, tenacity, and pragmatism to the U.S. Senate and fought hard for the American people during her tenure.
By sponsoring legislation to expand voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, gun safety, and reproductive health care, she fought to make sure our government works for all of us. Her leadership has been a constant reminder of the power of Democratic pro-choice women in government.
EMILYs List has ensured that Laphonza Butler will not be the last Black woman to make history in the U.S. Senate as she bids farewell to the chamber. Sens.-elect Angela Alsobrooks (MD) and Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE) will stand on the shoulders of Carol Moseley Braun, Kamala Harris, and Laphonza Butler as they become the first two Black women to serve in the U.S. Senate at the same time.
And we're not stopping there. EMILYs List will elect more Democratic pro-choice women in years to come — women who will continue the legacy of those who came before them. Donate now to help sustain this work in 2025, 2026, and beyond:
