Dear Neighbor,
This week, I’ve focused on the need for reliable public transit, the climate resilience of our communities, and delivering the resources our hospitals need in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. From holding Amtrak and NJ Transit accountable for terrible delays and cancellations to securing funding for critical flood protections in Sayreville and Port Monmouth, I’m committed to delivering results that make life better for households across New Jersey’s 6th District.
Demanding Better from Amtrak and NJ Transit
If you’ve been frustrated by recent delays on Amtrak and NJ Transit lately, you’re not alone—I’m frustrated, too. When wire issues this week stranded thousands of commuters, I demanded riders receive refunds for being waylaid. Public transportation needs to be reliable, and right now, we’re being let down by outdated infrastructure. I’ve already secured $112 million to modernize critical systems, but there’s more work to do. Our commuters deserve better, and I won’t stop fighting until Amtrak and NJ Transit deliver the improvements they’ve promised.
Protecting Sayreville with Restored Wetlands
Our natural landscapes are some of the best defenses we have against climate change, and I’m thrilled to share progress on a critical project in Sayreville. I helped secure $1.57 million in federal funding to restore 188 acres of wetlands along the South River. This work will reduce flooding, protect families, and enhance habitats for wildlife like bald eagles and terrapins. For years, this ecosystem has been overlooked, but we’re finally making strides to rebuild and protect it. This is about resilience—both for our environment and our communities. With this investment, we’re preparing Sayreville for a safer, greener future.
$13 Million to Help Local Hospitals Recover
I secured over $13 million in federal funding to help Saint Peter’s University Hospital and Hackensack Meridian Health facilities recover from the financial toll of COVID-19. This funding reimburses hospitals for hiring emergency workers and managing the surge in cases. It’s critical that these facilities can keep delivering care to everyone in our district. Our health care workers went above and beyond for us—I’m committed to making sure they have the support they need to thrive. Together, we’re building a stronger foundation for public health.
A Safer Future for Port Monmouth
Twelve years ago, Superstorm Sandy devastated Port Monmouth. Today, we’re closer than ever to completing a $61.8 million flood protection project I helped fund. This final phase includes levees, floodwalls, and advanced drainage systems to keep families and businesses safe. I’ll never forget the destruction Sandy caused—it’s what drives me to keep fighting for resilient, smart solutions like this one. It’s a testament to what we can accomplish when federal, state, and local leaders work together.
