John,
A few weeks back, we asked each of you how you've been holding up during this challenging time, and for your thoughts on upcoming elections.
Since then, thousands of you have reached out to share your stories and perspectives. We're still working our way through each entry, but we wanted to share some of the responses that particularly moved us:
I take care of COVID-19 patients in the hospital. As a result, I can't see my parents out of fear that I'll infect them. My husband is also a hospital worker so we are both at risk. If we get sick, I have no idea who will take care of our 4 small children. We can't risk the health of our parents or a babysitter. —Sarah S., Chula Vista, CA
I am a grocery worker who is required to work despite the fact that I have asthma. I am really struggling to keep up and stay at work, but I don't have enough PTO to stay home. — Julia C., West Haven, CT
I was finally at the brink of financial stability, but my seasonal job was canceled due to the tourism industry being hit unfathomably hard ... I turn 23 years old this week … My life seemed to finally be getting on track after growing up in poverty and climbing out as best I could. Everything is so demoralizing right now. —Sara T., New York, NY
My coworker was fired for putting out a one-page flyer in the break room about how union workers can negotiate for better healthcare. (We don't have a union, but many of us want one.) It's sick that companies and partisans are taking advantage of this crisis to exploit working people, bailout millionaires, bailout big companies and ignore the needs of our local communities. — James V., Eugene, OR
Each of these stories — and so many more like them — are powerful reminders of what's at stake right now.
Your stories inspire us to keep fighting and keep showing up for our neighbors and communities. Because throwing tens of millions of Americans into unemployment and forcing millions more to go to work in unsafe conditions was an intentional policy choice — and it doesn't have to be this way.
If you're as fired up as we are to elect hundreds more working families champions at every level of government who will fight for PEOPLE, not corporations — can you chip in $3 or more today?
