Welcome to the first newsletter of December
I've had a great week in the constituency and in parliament, meeting world boxing champions, attending Christmas fairs, meeting with the chair of the Health Select Committee and presenting awards at the Royal Society for Public Health.
On a more sombre note, this week I've stood up on issues such as HIV & AIDS, as well as the findings of the Cumberledge review. I'm working hard to make sure that by 2030 there are no new cases of HIV, and that women's voices are heard in healthcare.

⚕️ Cumberledge Review
On Thursday, I addressed the House in Westminster Hall on the findings of the Cumberledge Report, and the steps we’re taking to address the recommendations within this report.
We’re committed to delivering the final 3 recommendations made by the report: improving care for women, creating a system that places their voices at the heart of healthcare, and ensuring that the rights of women are protected across healthcare.
🥊Smile Aid Fundraiser with Artur Beterbiev
On Saturday I attended the Smile Aid charity fundraiser alongside Afzal Khan MP and the world light heavyweight boxing champion, Artur Beterbiev.
It was a fantastic event that raised hundreds of thousands for a great cause, truly Manchester at its best.
Me and Afzal thought we might be able to take him on, but we thought better of it!
💬 Health Select Committee
On Thursday, it was good to meet with Health Select Committee Chair Layla Moran.
She came to the Department to talk about the role of the Select Committee, and particularly around areas of public health and prevention. We covered a lot of ground including obesity, immunisations, clean air, long COVID, ME and child health.
I look forward to working with Layla and the committee, and even appearing there to take questions from time to time.
🎄Haughton Green Christmas Market
It was wonderful to drop into the Haughton Green Christmas Artisan Markets last weekend, there was lots to buy, including cakes, sweets, beers and gifts!
Santa was also there, and there was mulled wine and other festive treats on offer, I was sadly on the train back to London when they switched the lights on, but it was a wonderful event.
🥫 Foodbanks in Levenshulme and Burnage
Across last weekend I visited foodbanks in Levenshulme and Burnage, to see the incredible work they're doing to prepare for their Christmas collection.
One day we will live in a country where foodbanks don't have to exist, but for now they're a vital support for those in food poverty.
This Christmas period, please give to your local foodbank if you can.
