California’s Attorney General has launched a lawsuit against Big Oil. After decades of deception, cover-up, and damage that cost taxpayers billions of dollars in health and environmental impacts, we could finally hold the fossil fuel industry accountable.
The case of The People of the State of California v. Big Oil asserts that:
- Oil and gas executives have known for decades about the dangers of the fossil fuels they produce.
- Industry-funded reports directly linked fossil fuel consumption to rising global temperatures and damage to our air, land, and water.
- Oil companies have intentionally covered up these reports to protect their profits, and spent billions of dollars to spread disinformation about climate change to delay our transition away from fossil fuels.
- Oil companies have disregarded their findings and developed new technology to explore the Arctic for oil production because they knew Arctic sea ice was melting.
- Oil companies continue to deceive the public today. They promote polluting fossil fuel products as “clean” or “green” or “low-emissions”, and they lie about their usage of renewable fuel products.
Oil and gas executives have lied to the public and exacerbated problems with the health of our environment. Extreme weather events like Hurricanes Milton and Helene are likely to increase in frequency and intensity due to fossil fuel pollution in the coming years.

- Launch an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the climate change disclosures of all major fossil fuel companies operating in the United States.
- Hold these companies accountable for any misleading statements they have made regarding the risks associated with their products.
- Require fossil fuel companies to make disclosures about the financial risks associated with climate change, including the potential impacts on their business model and the value of their assets.
Climate change is an existential threat to our future on this planet, and the fossil fuel industry has long worsened this crisis. We must take immediate action to hold these oil and gas companies accountable for their destruction and lies.
