Dear John,
The fifth round of negotiations for a global plastic pollution treaty ended Sunday evening. Over the week, WWF and our partners across businesses and non-governmental organizations—backed by the powerful voices of people like you—worked tirelessly to push for a legally binding treaty addressing plastic pollution across its entire lifecycle.
By the end of the week, over 95 countries held their ground, refusing to accept anything less than binding global bans and phaseouts of harmful plastic products and chemicals. Unfortunately, despite this overwhelming majority, countries couldn't come to an agreement on a final treaty text.
This means we won't have a treaty by the end of 2024, and negotiations will continue into next year. While this isn't the outcome we hoped for, the draft on the table includes many of our key demands and Must Haves. And that's better than rushing into a weak, voluntary treaty now.
What's clear is that most people want bold action. We also know the scale of this crisis demands more urgency and ambition than we've seen so far.
