More than 37 million people have lost their jobs, and nearly 90,000 people are dead from COVID-19. Estimates show that 27 million of those newly unemployed lost their health insurance as well,1 which is terrifying during a pandemic.
This shows the fragility of the employer-based health care system in America. To correct it, Congress should pass the Health Care Emergency Guarantee Act, which would let Medicare step in to take care of people who lose their health insurance during this emergency.

This bill was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Bernie Sanders, and in the House by Rep. Pramila Jayapal―the same pair who introduced The Medicare for All Act. This isn’t that―it’s something that can be implemented immediately and provide real assistance to people who need it during this pandemic.
Remember: Donald Trump spent the first year of his presidency trying to kick 20 million+ people off their insurance through Trumpcare. We beat him then, but his mismanagement of the pandemic means that millions more are at risk of being impoverished by our greedy for-profit insurance system. Medicare should cover all treatment for the uninsured and cover all out-of-pocket costs for those with public or private insurance for as long as the pandemic continues―including coronavirus testing and an eventual vaccine.
