As our founder and chairman noted, COP 29’s disappointing conclusion only underscores the importance of next year’s climate talks in Brazil.

After two weeks of deliberations, wealthy countries came together and settled on a $300 billion per year climate deal, but it’s a far cry from what vulnerable countries need to survive the climate crisis.

“While the agreement reached at COP 29 avoids immediate failure, it is far from a success,” former Vice President Al Gore wrote in his statement on COP 29.

Although negotiations failed to yield adequate funding for climate finance, COP 29 was nevertheless a great time to gather with our global network of Climate Reality Leaders and staff #OnTheGroundCOP29.

Here are some highlights and takeaways from this year’s United Nations climate conference in Baku:

•  We hosted Raising Climate Ambition, a special event featuring a panel discussion moderated by former US Vice President Al Gore on the state of global action on climate and what is still needed to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis.
• Climate TRACE co-founders former Vice President Gore and Gavin McCormick unveiled the latest data for Climate TRACE – a tech-driven tool to track emissions at the source, provide monthly emissions estimates, and more. Watch a clip on CBC of our founder and chairman's remarks.
• The African Climate Reality Project and The Climate Reality Project Philippines presented a climate finance accountability tool that uses publicly available climate finance data to track climate finance flows.
• African Climate Reality Project Senior Campaigner Courtney Morgan participated in a panel for the launch of the Just Energy Transition (JET) Funding Platform.
• The Climate Reality Project Philippines co-hosted an event alongside the government of Pakistan and Climate Vulnerable Forum. It highlighted the role of youth in vulnerable nations in pursuing climate justice.
• The Climate Reality Project Indonesia hosted a discussion at the Indonesia Pavilion exploring how intergenerational collaboration can drive meaningful climate action.
• The Climate Reality Project India & South Asia partnered with IYCN for an event on unlocking climate finance for a sustainable, equitable future.

Following previous events in Egypt and UAE, COP 29 in Azerbaijan marked the third year in a row that the world’s most high-stakes climate negotiations have been hosted by petrostates.

One thing is clear: The outsized influence of fossil fuel interests at these talks demonstrates the dire need to reform the COP process.

As we look to next year’s COP 30 in Brazil, it’s on us to keep up the pressure and push for real solutions that meet the urgency of the moment.
