On Tuesday, I reached out to share big news: We’ve started a second nonprofit, GGWash Commons, to help build civic capacity in the Washington region in support of better housing, transportation, and land use policy.
(If you missed it, read more in the official announcement, check out the GGWash Commons website, and find a bit more detail below.)
At the same time, I asked for your help: we're trying to raise $10,000 for GGWash Commons by Friday, December 13 to unlock $10,000 in matching funds and help this new organization start off strong.
You've already responded in a big way, contributing $4,208 -- more than 40% of our goal -- in less than two days. Thank you to these individuals who stepped up as Founding Supporters since our Tuesday announcement: Douglas A., Dan B., Ben B, Stair C., Dan C., Stephanie C., Andrew D., Mike D., Gregg F., Nick F., Patrick H., Parrie H., Calvin H., Christopher J., Aidan L., Josh L., Abby L., Barry M., Ryan M., Joseph S., Bruce S., J. S., Joshua T., Rebecca T., Amy V., Tommy W.
If you haven't yet, please make a tax-deductible contribution to our new 501(c)(3) arm to help us reach our goal and celebrate the launch of GGWash Commons. |

Why we've launched a second nonprofit
GWash is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, which means we’re allowed to engage in political activity and don’t face limits on lobbying. But (c)(4) status alone isn’t as flexible as we need it to be. Advancing land use, housing, and transportation policy involves more than political, lobbying, and advocacy activity. We publish stories, we host events, we lead trainings, we undertake occasional research projects, and more. More than 90% of GGWash’s budget is spent on nonpolitical work. Most foundations, however, won’t give grants to 501(c)(4) nonprofits, and many donors prefer the tax-deductibility of donations made to 501(c)(3) organizations.
So the team behind GGWash has launched a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Greater Greater Washington Commons, to take the lead on several areas of work. GGWash and GGWash Commons will exist side-by-side. Learn more in the official announcement.
Thank you for joining us in writing this newest chapter. We're feeling inspired and motivated by the outpouring of support and well wishes.
I couldn't be more excited to work together to grow the movement to make this a region where housing is abundant and affordable and it's safe and easy to walk, bike, roll, and take transit to get around. |
