Dear John

When a loved one lives with severe mental illness (SMI), it can feel like the world isn’t listening, and the systems that should help instead fall woefully short. For me, having a younger sister with SMI means that my role as godmother to her son Arol extends far beyond sending holiday gifts and offering occasional guidance.

From the yearly tradition of helping Arol pick out his Halloween costume to countless hours of doing homework together, being a caretaker or ally extends far beyond supporting just the person with a diagnosis of SMI. It means stepping in to care for their children, look after their pets, or take on daily responsibilities when the symptoms of mental illness make it impossible for them to function. For families like ours, it truly does take a village.

I recognize that my experience is not unique, but rather one that many in our community can relate to. I want you to know that at TAC, we truly understand the obstacles you face and the struggles you endure. Your experiences fuel our passion, commitment, and all the work that we do.

As 2024 comes to a close, I invite you to join us in transforming pain, frustration, and uncertainty into meaningful action in the fight for effective treatment and compassionate care. By making your end-of-year gift to TAC, you support our vital work, improve countless lives, and help transform the national landscape surrounding SMI.
