friend – can you imagine what debt cancellation would do for lower-income countries?
New research shows that it could mean 7 million people gaining access to safe drinking water, 5 million more children attending school, and over 59,000 children and mothers’ lives being saved.
But, right now, the funds that could bring about these changes are instead going to line the coffers of rich banks, hedge funds and oil traders.
Honestly, friend, it makes me angry that any country should have to choose between providing basic services and paying these unfair debts, with their over-inflated interest rates. Which is why I’m delighted that our campaign for debt cancellation has taken several strides forward this year.
This week is the Big Give Christmas Challenge – whereby any donation you make to us will be doubled! Could you turn £10 into £20, £25 into £50, or £50 into £100 today and take the demand for debt justice even further in 2025? Together we can push our campaign for a new debt justice law over the finish line.

54 lower-income countries are currently in debt crisis – forced to choose between debt repayments and basic services. But the UK has a huge opportunity to change that – because nine out of ten debts owed by lower-income countries to banks, hedge funds and oil traders are overseen by UK law. A change in the law here has the power to force greedy lenders to cancel unfair debts.
This year, our collective campaigning got the new government to commit to “tackling unsustainable debt” in lower-income countries. Now we’re focused on turning words into action. Like with our successful parliamentary event to which thousands of you invited your MPs – and helped us forge new relationships with MPs who can further our demands within government.
A new debt justice law is within our grasp. But to get our campaign over the finish line, we need you to make sure we can keep up the pressure. Any donation you give today will be DOUBLED – mobilising more people to take action, building more momentum, and piling more pressure on our government to act.

Let’s stop imagining, friend. And instead build a world where people’s basic needs come before the profits of rich banks.
Together we can make it possible.
In solidarity,
Heidi Chow
