Salaam,
The historic events unfolding in Syria are a continuation of the legitimate struggle of the Syrian people for freedom and dignity. For too long, the Syrian people have suffered under the rule of the Assad family and their accomplices. Over a million killed, 12 million made homeless, and a country destroyed as a result of a dictatorial regime’s bid to hold on to power.
The Syrian regime’s violent response to peaceful protests transformed calls for democracy and freedom into a catastrophic civil war that brought non-Syrian powers, including the United States, into the conflict. The war witnessed unimaginable cruelty by the Assad regime including mass bombardment, use of chemical weapons, and starvation of entire towns and cities. It also saw the rise of violent radical groups, including the so-called Islamic State, which betrayed the Syrian people and harmed countless communities, especially religious and ethnic minorities.
While the outcome of the latest rebel offensive remains unclear, it is incumbent upon the international community, including the United States, to re-prioritize this ignored conflict and include it in a broader peace-based approach for the region. An approach that prioritizes civilian protection, humanitarian and development assistance, and political negotiations and reconciliation. Syria, like the broader Middle East, is a rich mosaic of people and civilizations. A principled foreign policy should not be based on the privileging of any one group over another, but rather, seeking solutions that benefit all.
We call on the U.S. government to work with partners to protect Syrian civilians in Aleppo and other areas. There are concerning reports of airstrikes targeting hospitals and other critical civilian infrastructure. The United States should also invest in a political solution based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254, that leads to the creation of a transitional governing body to oversee this critical period of Syria’s history. A body that is representative of Syria’s key stakeholders and one that ensures a peaceful transition toward a democratic and free Syria.
