Representatives Adriano Espaillat and Jenniffer González-Colón Announce Passage of Bill Creating the Roberto Clemente Commemorative Coin

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Jenniffer González-Colón (Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico) announced passage of their bipartisan bill, H.R. 6751, the Roberto Clemente Commemorative Coin Act. Senator Majority Leader Charles Schumer has introduced the companion bill, S.5408, in the Senate for consideration.

"Roberto Clemente was a baseball icon and trailblazer who broke barriers as the first Latin American inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and as of the greatest players in history. Clemente used his platform to advocate for civil rights and racial equality and his dedication to service extended beyond the diamond,” said Congressman Adriano Espaillat. “Perhaps most inspiring was Clemente’s humanitarian work to deliver aid to Latin American nations, and throughout his home of Puerto Rico. Clemente’s life and selfless humanitarian acts defined his legacy. In his honor, the MLB established the Roberto Clemente Award. Given annually, it recognizes a player who best exemplifies baseball, sportsmanship, and community involvement. It has been awarded to the greats such as Willie Mays, Sammy Sosa, Aaron Judge and many others. Similar to the award, this bill pays further tribute to Clemente’s unparalleled contributions, making him the first Latino, Afro-Latino, and Puerto Rican featured on a commemorative coin. I am grateful to be joined in this effort by my esteemed colleague, Jenniffer González-Colón, and am honored to secure House passage of our bill in recognition of Roberto Clemente’s enduring impact on the world.”

Congresistas Adriano Espaillat y Jenniffer González-Colón anuncian la aprobación del proyecto de ley que crea la Moneda Conmemorativa de Roberto Clemente

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Hoy, los congresistas Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) y Jenniffer González-Colón (comisionada residente de Puerto Rico) anunciaron la aprobación de su proyecto de ley bipartidista, H.R. 6751, la Ley de la Moneda Conmemorativa Roberto Clemente. El líder de la mayoría del Senado, Charles Schumer, introdujo el proyecto de ley complementario, S.5408, en el Senado para su consideración.

"Roberto Clemente fue un ícono y pionero del béisbol que rompió barreras como el primer latinoamericano incluido en el Salón de la Fama del Béisbol Nacional y como uno de los mejores jugadores de la historia de este deporte. Clemente usó su plataforma para defender los derechos civiles y la igualdad racial, y su dedicación al servicio se extendió más allá del diamante", dijo Espaillat. "Quizás lo más inspirador fue el trabajo humanitario de Clemente para entregar ayuda a las naciones latinoamericanas y en su natal Puerto Rico. La vida de Clemente y sus actos humanitarios desinteresados definieron su legado. En su honor, la MLB estableció el Premio Roberto Clemente, el cual se otorga anualmente y reconoce al jugador que mejor ejemplifica el béisbol, el espíritu deportivo y la participación comunitaria. Se ha otorgado a grandes jugadores como Willie Mays, Sammy Sosa, Aaron Judge y muchos otros. Similar al premio, este proyecto de ley rinde un homenaje adicional a las contribuciones incomparables de Clemente, convirtiéndolo en el primer latino, afrolatino y puertorriqueño que aparece en una moneda conmemorativa. Estoy agradecido de que mi estimada colega, Jenniffer González-Colón, se haya sumado a este esfuerzo y me siento honrado de lograr que la Cámara de Representantes apruebe nuestro proyecto de ley en reconocimiento del impacto duradero de Roberto Clemente en el mundo”.
