A few weeks ago, the Violence Policy Center released a sobering report on the statistics of unnatural and violent deaths in the US in 2022 (the most recent year for which data is available). It found that gun deaths – including homicide, suicide, and unintentional death – outpaced vehicular deaths in 35 states, including Pennsylvania .[1]

Unfortunately these numbers are not surprising, but they sure are stark. Consider this arithmetic: 9 in 10 American households own or have immediate access to a car, while only 4 in 10 possess a firearm. Yet, firearms are responsible for more deaths in more than half our states!

Breaking awful statistics like this is exactly why we do this work. And I know it’s why you choose to invest your hard-earned money in our movement. I know most Pennsylvanians, and a majority of gun owners, support bipartisan gun safety policies that rein in the gun industry and make us all safer. That’s why we fight so hard for legislation like Extreme Risk Prevention Orders (ERPOs), safe storage, and bans on Glock switches and ghost guns – all policies that have broad support here and have saved lives in other states where they’ve been enacted.

I’m gonna give it to you straight: come January, we will have our work cut out for us. With no partners in Washington, we have to rely on ourselves and our narrow gun safety majority in the PA House to enact the laws we know will protect our communities from gun violence.
