Hi John,
I am very pleased to announce that New Economy for Working (NEW) Houston [[link removed]] has joined the PowerSwitch Action network! We’re excited to welcome our newest affiliate, who is building grassroots organizing power, winning innovative public policy, and fighting for a just, inclusive economy in the Gulf Coast.
Right now, we’re in San Diego for our annual board retreat, where nearly fifty of our affiliate leaders and national team have gathered to reflect and strategize for the work ahead. As we plan for 2025 and beyond, now more than ever we are committed to strengthening our communities and growing our movements to meet this moment—and welcoming NEW Houston to our network accomplishes just that.

Founded in 2021, NEW Houston supports labor and community organizations by conducting research, shaping policies, and advocating for campaigns that build an inclusive regional economy where working people, families, and neighborhoods thrive. They are focused in particular on organizing and transforming Harris County in Texas, where residents face overlapping challenges, from a worsening eviction crisis to unreliable and unaffordable electricity. In addition to fighting for affordable housing and reliable clean energy in Harris County, NEW Houston has been pushing back against the state takeover of Houston’s school district. By opposing this intervention, NEW Houston has been advocating for the importance of local governance and for community-driven solutions that prioritize the needs of students and families in Houston.
[[link removed]] Our network is rooted in the belief that local grassroots organizing and co-governance can transform our society from the ground up. In a state where corporate power thrives and snakes its way into policymaking, NEW Houston’s work to ensure that everyday people — workers, renters, immigrants, women, queer and trans folks — can govern and represent their communities’ needs is critical.

In the past year, NEW Houston has:
* Produced a report on the Eviction Crisis in Houston. [[link removed]]
* Worked with the Power Up Harris County Coalition to win a $250 million Solar for All grant, including a historic commitment to Texas’s first project labor agreement.
* Provided disaster relief and emergency assistance to low-income residents in the immediate aftermath of the derecho and Hurricane Beryl.
