Case debrief: U.S. v s Skrmetti
What's at stake ā ļø
Trans rights are under attack across the country.
Just last week, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill into law [[link removed]] that bans transgender students from using the school bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity.
Horrific policies like these are only making schools and community spaces more dangerous for trans youth.
And it hasn't stopped there.
24 states have now banned gender-affirming care for trans youth. These bans threaten young trans peopleās right to exist as their authentic selves.
The importance of gender-affirming care š
Gender-affirming care can include physical and mental health services, social services, and other types of care. These are proven to be life-saving treatments, especially for trans youth. Now, over 100,000 families with trans youth live in a state that has outlawed the medical care they need.
The same politicians outlawing this care and attacking trans people are the same ones implementing deadly abortion bans, threatening birth control access, and introducing drag bans or other anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
All of these attacks come from a preoccupation with peopleās bodies and a desperate need to control certain populations.
Thatās why bodily autonomy is the core of Reproductive Justice. An attack on the bodily autonomy of some of us is an attack on all of us.
Details of the case š¼
Three families with trans youth, a medical provider, and civil rights advocates in Tennessee are asking SCOTUS to rule on whether the bans against gender-affirming care violate the US Constitution.
The result of this case could move us forwardāor it could pave the way for even more attacks on trans peopleās right to exist. The ability to make OUR own decisions about OUR bodies is on the line.
