Over the last five years, Ecuador has descended rapidly into brutal violence and criminal chaos that has torn communities apart, rocked its institutions, and shocked the region.

In this investigation, InSight Crime traces the roots of this collapse to the country’s prison system and its takeover by a new generation of organized crime.
