Donald Trump recently announced that he will nominate MAGA ally Kash Patel to serve as FBI Director during his second term. It is an unprecedented move: the current FBI Director, Christopher Wray, is serving a term that is supposed to last until 2027.

For decades, it has been understood that the FBI Director should not be a partisan position . Our nation’s security should take precedence over politics, every single time. Prior presidents have kept the FBI Director of their predecessors in adherence to this understanding – until now .

This is a dangerous break from tradition. Donald Trump is replacing a qualified leader with yet another crony. We can all see where this is going: Trump will use the FBI and other national security institutions as a tool to punish his political enemies.
