The first corruption scandal of Trump's second term is already here
Donald Trump hasn't even been sworn in yet and already he’s embroiled in a major corruption scandal. Justin Sun, the crypto bozo who infamously spent $6 million to eat a banana that was part of a postmodern art piece, just spent $30 million on crypto tokens from the Trump-backed World Liberty Financial. Until Sun’s purchase, Trump’s crypto start-up appeared headed for failure with only $22 million in tokens sold, far short of its goal of $300 million in sales. The purchase not only keeps WLF going, but also guarantees a windfall for Trump. The company quickly sold off those tokens, netting Trump a profit of $18 MILLION — and got Sun an advisory position in Trump’s venture, making him business partners with the future president. As if that wasn't enough, Sun is already under investigation by the SEC for fraud, and Trump’s new SEC chair could very easily be told to just make Justin’s legal problems disappear. Prettttty clear to see what's going on here. Now, if only there was some kind of law enforcement body, like a department dedicated to meting out justice, that could do something about it...

Trump's pick for Defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, is in peril in the Senate
As many as six GOP senators are reportedly uncomfortable with supporting the former Fox News host for the role of Defense secretary, due to the steady drip of appalling stories about his sexual improprieties and wild drinking. This comes on the heels of new reporting that says Hegseth drank in ways that worried his co-workers at Fox, citing multiple instances in which he smelled like alcohol on set and complained about being hungover. The cherry on the cake is a new Vanity Fair story that details the dissolution of his first marriage, during which he had five affairs while gaslighting and manipulating his wife the entire time. Thankfully, it appears this degenerate scumbag will not be anywhere near the controls of our nation's armed forces.

Congress faces shutdown dilemma that could mess with Trump's first 100 days
Benjamin Franklin famously opined: "In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes, and budget-related government shutdown crises in GOP-controlled Congresses." Uh, pretty sure that's the quote? No? Anyway, an entire year's worth of kicking the can down the road has come back to bite the GOP in the butt in a big way. It's looking like Congress will have to punt on funding the government yet again, as they have somehow run out of time to make a deal with Democrats. The two parties haven't even agreed on an overall spending level for the new fiscal year, let alone how to allocate the money across parts of the government. Now, they're going to create a critical deadline early in the Trump presidency that would take valuable time away from confirming his nominees through the Senate and from the big party-line bill they want to pass extending the MAGA cult leader's tax cuts for the megawealthy. Womp womp.
Martial law reversed in South Korea after president’s surprise decree sent shockwaves
The attempted right-wing coup by the Republic of Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol fizzled in humiliating fashion after public backlash and quick action by South Korean lawmakers forced him to rescind his declaration of martial law. Yoon Suk Yeol invoked Article 77 of the constitution in an attempt to neuter the liberal opposition to his government and justified the move in very Trumpian fashion, accusing them of being communist sympathizers and "despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces." Neither the public nor the legislature was having any of it; furious crowds kept the military away from the parliament building long enough for lawmakers to form a quorum and vote to block martial law. It's safe to say an impeachment will follow shortly. It's a grim reminder of how easily democracy can be suffocated by a would-be strongman — and how defense of democracy falls on all us to do our part. Not a single member of Yoon Suk Yeol's party voted in favor of his attempted coup, while 121 congressmembers and 6 senators voted in favor of Trump's. Something to keep in mind.
Defiant Macron says he won't resign French presidency, doubles down on Prime Minister Barnier’s survival
Across the pond, our friends in France are having a political crisis of their own as a looming no-confidence vote in Prime Minister Michel Barnier threatens to collapse the government. The whole thing started in September when Macron made the questionable decision to cast aside the leftist block and instead form a shaky coalition with right-wing hardliners in order to push through an austerity budget of tax increases and cuts to public services. Barnier ultimately used special powers to force through that budget without a vote from Parliament, which prompted a no-confidence vote from the left and an utterly predictable backstab from Marine Le Pen's far-right coalition, which ALSO filed its own no-confidence motion — all but guaranteeing the dissolution of the government, barring some eleventh-hour devil's bargain with the duplicitous far-right.
