Trump and associates are drawing consistent media attention and making sweeping claims about their plans for policy change that could affect immigrants. These claims have the potential to confuse immigrant families, undermining access to safety net programs. News outlets serving immigrant families can lower these barriers, by providing accurate information right now. You can help, by pitching journalists on “explainer” articles that provide accurate information about safety net eligibility and clarify that the election has not changed public charge or other immigration policy. We are happy to coordinate with you in pitching local journalists. We will, of course, update this pitch and other materials if policies change next year.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) offers tax credits to make health coverage more affordable, and a pandemic-era expansion of these credits helped to cover more than 5 million people. People who have low incomes, including lawfully present immigrants, can qualify for these credits, but they will expire next year unless Congress acts. A new tool by the Urban Institute illustrates the health consequences, which are expected to drive up the uninsured rate by more than 40% in some states.

Late last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to give the incoming administration unilateral ability to shut down any tax-exempt organization – including non-profit immigrant rights’ organizations–based on allegations of wrongdoing. The bill passed 219-184 with all Republicans but one and 15 Democrats voting in favor. A very broad range of groups, including immigration groups, strongly issued recommendations to vote NO on this bill. This Senate is unlikely to consider the bill this year, and if they did, President Biden seems likely to veto it. We will monitor the next Congress and provide additional guidance as needed.
