Although nearly all older Americans have Medicare coverage, they still pay more for health care than their counterparts in many other countries, according to new Commonwealth Fund survey findings. Older U.S. adults also are more likely to postpone or skip needed care ([link removed] ) .
The survey highlights the burden that high out-of-pocket costs — in both traditional Medicare and private Medicare Advantage plans — place on older adults. Among the key findings:
- Nearly one in four older U.S. adults spent at least $2,000 out of pocket on health care last year.
- Older Americans skip or forgo needed medical treatment at some of the highest rates in the survey.
- One in five older adults in the U.S., Australia, and Canada skipped needed dental care because of costs.
