TUNE IN: An important new documentary on Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, produced and directed by Claremont Senior Fellow Michael Pack, airs on PBS tonight, May 18, at 9 p.m. EST (check your local listings). Watch the trailer below! In his 27 years on the court, Thomas’s jurisprudence has often been controversial—from his brand of originalism to his decisions on affirmative action and other hot button topics. Famously silent during oral argument and keeping a decidedly low public profile, few know Thomas outside of often unfair newspaper headlines. But now, for the first time, Justice Thomas tells his entire life’s story, looking directly at the camera, speaking frankly to the audience. This first-person account is accompanied by a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience. Recommended reading: As a complement to this documentary, read Martha Bayles’ review, “A Mouthful of Bees” in the Spring issue of the Claremont Review of Books. “Created Equal is one of the most moving, fascinating, compelling film biographies I have seen.” “Unlike most film biographies, Created Equal does not fill the screen with an agglomeration of talking heads, all vying to pin the tail on the same donkey. Instead, there are only two speakers, Thomas and his wife, Virginia. The film opens on the Associate Justice, dressed in business attire and seated in one of those shadowy interiors meant to focus attention on the illuminated personage facing the camera.” Read the entire review here. Tune in to PBS tonight to watch the film on May 18 at 9 PM (check your local listings). DVDs and streaming will be available in summer 2020.
