Hi John, it’s Tony Goldwyn. Before I ask you to join me in supporting the Innocence Project for Giving Tuesday, I want to tell you a little more about how I first learned about this cause.

In 2001, my wife and I were watching the news when we learned of Kenny Waters, a man who served 18 years in prison before DNA testing proved his innocence. I’ll admit that up until that moment, I knew very little about wrongful convictions in the U.S. and how alarmingly common they are. I eventually made a film called Conviction — starring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell — about Kenny and his sister Betty Anne, who became a lawyer just to try and free her brother.

Learning about Kenny, who was an Innocence Project client, awakened me to the reality that there are many cracks in our criminal legal system and many people who spend decades in prison for crimes they did not commit. That’s why, today, I’m doing everything within my power to help the Innocence Project advance the innocence movement — and why I’m personally asking:
