Next year, every state and local office will become a critical barrier between the rule of law and "anything goes."

Presidential immunity, weakened federal agencies, and appointing friends to positions of power mean that folks like our local state reps and district attorneys and mayors must step up as the last check on corruption and abuse of power.

It's up to all of us – citizens and elected officials alike – to say "we will not comply."

Who we put in local office matters because our local elected officials have the power to decide if they will arrest the homeless for having no shelter, if they will prosecute officials guilty of fraud, bribery, or misconduct, and if they will bar women from crossing state lines to seek an abortion.

We are counting on them to uphold the rule of law. And that's why the local elections happening around the country this coming spring are crucial. In fact, the first filing deadlines for local races start as early as next month – that's why we've already begun the work to recruit new candidates so that no race goes uncontested.

Action is our only option.
