Friend,
In 2017, I worked with a family who was profoundly affected by Trump’s family separation policy. Laura and her nine-year-old son, Daniel, arrived to the United States-Mexico border, where they were apprehended by Border Patrol. Laura remembers that they had been in Border Patrol custody for just a couple of days when several officers came in and told her that she'd be sent to jail for entering the country after a previous deportation, and that her son would be sent back to their home country without her.
Throughout this heart-wrenching experience, Laura felt like the officers, who only gave Laura five minutes to say goodbye to her son, were laughing at her. She hugged Daniel and told him that she loved him. She remembers that he didn't respond.
Daniel was taken from the Border Patrol station in Texas and placed in a juvenile immigration detention center for unaccompanied children in New York. But Daniel was never unaccompanied to begin with. He arrived with his mother, a loving caregiver who was seeking safety for the two of them.
When the Young Center was appointed as Child Advocate for Daniel the first thing he asked us to do was help his mom. While the Young Center fought fiercely on behalf of Daniel and Laura, it took fourteen months to reunite them.
I’ve stayed in touch with Laura over the years. Recently, she’s shared her fears of what a new Trump administration might mean for her and her family, who've already lived through so much on account of harmful government policy. But Laura also shared her faith in continuing her fight for safety and stability for her family by giving me permission to share her story.
We ask that you join us in uplifting the voices of families like Laura and Daniel's by giving a donation today and helping raise $65,000.00 by midnight. Will you join us?
