Hi. My name is Mia, and I’m a second-year member of Youth Voices with It Gets Better. I’m not going to lie… this has been a rough few weeks for me and a lot of young people. It’s been rough for a lot of folks, I know. But when I think about this year’s end of year fundraising theme — “Joy Rebellion” — I’m reminded how important it is to lean into joy, especially in difficult times. 

I draw joy and strength from artivism. Through dance specifically, sometimes I feel like it’s easier to express my feelings and emotions than when I’m writing or speaking. Writing, poetry, creative fiction, even through fashion, which is an art in and of itself. Each of these gives me the freedom to express my uniqueness. And it’s something it Gets Better has helped me lean into and cultivate. 

It Gets Better and specifically the Youth Voices program has given me the opportunity to be in community with other queer people. I’ve been able to not only express my queer identity, but also my Black identity, my Muslim identity, my non-binary identity — all of my identities together. Being around other queer people my age has made me feel more confident and given me the space and the freedom to express myself.
