“Texas looking at 'several' more tracts for Trump's mass deportations,” Houston Chronicle's Benjamin Wermund — “Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham said on Tuesday she was looking to offer “several” other tracts of state land to the incoming Trump administration for its mass deportation efforts [ [link removed] ].
“I meant it when I said that I will do everything in my power to help this administration,” Buckingham said, standing on the 1,400-acre ranch she recently offered President-elect Donald Trump to house immigrants with removal orders. “And that is why I'm announcing our offer has been extended beyond this property.”
Buckingham officially unveiled the “Jocelyn Initiative,” an effort by the General Land Office to find more tracts of land to aid Trump’s deportations, named for Jocelyn Nungaray, a Houston girl who was killed earlier this year.
Trump has not officially accepted Buckingham’s first offer. Buckingham said she had not heard directly from anyone in Trump’s camp after sending a letter last week offering the farmland near Rio Grande City, which the state bought last month for $3.8 million.
“I mean, they're obviously super busy, and so we're letting them do their thing. We just want to signal out that we're happy to be here and be a good partner,” Buckingham said in an interview with Hearst Newspapers. “We’ve seen their public statements that they’re interested and we'll have those talks when they're ready to have them.”
Buckingham said in an interview that she imagined the administration would lease the land from the state for the operation, and that the federal payments would help fund education in Texas, “which is a win-win, making Texas safer and funding education.”
Tom Homan, who Trump tapped to oversee the mass deportations, has said the administration would “absolutely” use the land. But Homan did not take the General Land Office up on an invitation to tour the property with Buckingham on Tuesday, even as he was in South Texas for two separate stops along the border with Gov. Greg Abbott — including one in nearby Edinburg.
The dueling events offered a glimpse into how Texas Republican leaders are jockeying to demonstrate their willingness to aid the incoming president in his border crackdown and deportation efforts.
Abbott — who has drawn frequent praise from Trump and Homan for overseeing an $11 billion border security initiative over the last four years — has been publicly quiet about Buckingham’s offer to use the land for deportations.
Buckingham said in an interview that Abbott’s opinion on her offer “doesn't matter.”
“It's our land,” Buckingham said, later clarifying she was “sort of teasing.”
She noted that the governor appoints members of the Texas Facilities Commission, which works with the General Land Office. But asked about conversations with the governor about the property in question, Buckingham responded: “We steward the 13 million acres of state land. It's in our purview.”
Abbott's spokesman Andrew Mahaleris shot back later that afternoon, saying in a statement, "Actually, under the Texas Constitution, any effort to lease or donate Texas land to the federal government must be conducted through the Governor's Office. We look forward to working with the Trump Administration and Texas state officials to find the best use of that land to further protect Texas and the nation.""
