Friends,

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day to celebrate and take part in the incredible power of collective generosity. Over the past two months, that power is something we’ve all watched and experienced—with every GoFundMe, every community cleanup day, every donation handed directly to a neighbor.

Throughout our region, we are all facing enormous challenges. Every farm in our Appalachian Grown network—nearly 1,000—has been impacted by the storm, either by direct damage or through loss of market outlets, like restaurants and tourism.

“Our food system is such that people who feed their communities have to fundraise after disasters,” wrote the farmers at Tiny Bridge Farm in Henderson, NC. “We recognize now what starts with seeds and soil becomes bigger than who we are as people when we put in the work. We still have topsoil so we have hope.”

While challenges lay ahead, we have asked our local food colleagues : [link removed] what is bringing them hope right now. What we’ve heard over and over is YOU. Whether you come to local food as a customer, a grower, an educator, a food industry worker, or a supporter, you are what is holding us together. You are how our region, our farmers, and our local food systems will bounce back.

Together, we can ensure that no matter what challenges lay ahead, that we will rebuild and sustain a local food economy that strengthens our communities and that farming is central to our future.

Thank you for caring about farmers in our region. Thank you for helping kids grow up learning about food from farmers, their families, and their teachers. Thank you for aiding so many in accessing free fruits and vegetables at farmers markets. Your passion and commitment to ASAP is what feeds our hope and our sense of purpose. Happy Giving Tuesday!

Together in service,
Your friends at ASAP
