AAVS has long acknowledged the importance of not only advocating for the release of animals from labs but, when that is achieved, also ensuring their relocation to safe and permanent homes. That challenge has been an integral part of our mission for decades. Since giving our first grant to a sanctuary in 1982, AAVS has since contributed over $4 million to sanctuaries that care for formerly abused animals. We greatly thank you for making that possible! Our annual Sanctuary Fund grants will be awarded later this week, and receiving a gift from you on Giving Tuesday would be especially meaningful. Also, as we have we done for the past two years, 2024 grants will include additional funding for veterinary services. Animals released from laboratories almost always require specialized care to adjust to their new environments. Many sanctuary residents lived in isolation before their release, and some suffer from health and behavioral conditions due to past traumas, including invasive medical procedures. Sanctuary veterinary staff provide a wide range of medical services to ensure that residents live healthy and vibrant lives. Treatments include clinical assessments, laboratory tests, prescription medications, physical therapy, pain management, and surgeries, as needed. Also, geriatric care is particularly important for primates, who experience many of the same issues as elderly humans. The animals need you. As costs for everything have increased, AAVS’s funding is critically needed to help sanctuaries maintain their facilities and high standards of care, including: balanced diets, safe shelters, environmental enrichment, and professional staff.
