We imagine Mari still remembers the smell of the forest—the damp earth after a rain, the comforting presence of her mother. Vaigai does, too. But those memories must be faint now … buried under decades of captivity.
This Giving Tuesday, help us ensure that Mari and Vaigai don’t spend the rest of their lives isolated in captivity [[link removed]] .
Mari and Vaigai were born in the subtropical wild of India, where elephants just like them roam freely in herds, their families guiding and protecting them. For Mari, that life–a free life–ended nearly 48 years ago. Vaigai lost hers at just a few years old. They were taken from their homes, separated from their families, and shipped across the world. For what purpose? To entertain. To be ambassadors for their species, the zoo says.
Mari and Vaigai aren’t ambassadors. They’re trapped in an unnatural environment, thousands of miles from their home.
For over 30 years, they have been alone, confined to a small exhibit far removed from the lush forests of their birth. The volcanic dirt beneath their feet is nothing like the jungle floor. Man-made pools don’t cool the ache of loneliness. And the constant rocking and swaying—behaviors caused by chronic stress—are a silent cry for help.
A donation today will support our work to advocate for Mari and Vaigai—whose court hearing is approaching in 2025—and others like them.
Help us continue to fight for their release, their right to liberty, and their chance at sanctuary. Donate today and give Mari and Vaigai the freedom they’ve been waiting for.
