** Engage talks Fertility Awareness

In 1960 the hormonal birth control pill ([link removed]) was approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Its creation was funded by Planned Parenthood’s founder Margaret Sanger, a known eugenicist ([link removed]) , and her followers claim the pill has given women an opportunity to both control when and who they want their families with, a vital piece of the women’s liberation movement. As feminist icon Betty Friedan points out in her best-selling book The Feminine Mystique, without a means for women to control their fertility, they have no ability to lead independent lives outside the home.

Today “the pill” is readily accepted by almost everyone and is prescribed to more than 12% ([link removed]) of women in the US. It is essentially free of charge through the Obamacare mandate ([link removed]) . But, recent research has highlighted the ill effects of taking the hormonal pill, including depression, blood clots, low libido, and even an increased risk of breast cancer ([link removed]) . The pill is often prescribed to women and girls who are not sexually active but experience irregular or painful menstrual cycles. As a consequence, most of these women suffering from diseases like polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, or even bad acne, are not given the opportunity to find the root cause of their health issues and actually relieve their symptoms. Many women have no knowledge of what a normal and healthy cycle
looks like off of the pill. This has lasting consequences, especially when she wants to get pregnant.

No matter where you stand on the debate of hormonal birth control, it is easy to see that its rise in popularity has come with some consequences. To expand on this issue, we talked with a fertility awareness expert, Emily Frase ([link removed]) , on Engage with Eagle Forum. Emily enlightens us on the methods available to women to control fertility without the need to use abortifacients or hormonal birth control.
