‘Tis the season! All of us at Power to Decide would like to express our thanks for your support as we help ensure everyone has the power to decide if, when, and under what circumstances to get pregnant and have a child. We look forward to working with all of you in 2025, and wish you, your colleagues, and family a happy and healthy holiday season.

Our 12th Successful #ThxBirthControl Day

Thank you to everyone who participated in Thanks, Birth Control Day this year! With the help of thousands nationwide, awareness of the importance of birth control — and greater access to it — spread across social media. Together we’ve highlighted the critical role of birth control in allowing people to define their futures and their destinies. Check out highlights from this year’s incredible celebration.

We would also like to thank our sponsors without whom #ThxBirthControl would not be possible: Bayer, the JPB Foundation, and Plan B One-Step emergency contraception.

New Feature on AbortionFinder

Access to abortion care is essential and supporting people who need these services is more important now than ever. That's why we've made some recent updates to AbortionFinder.org to better support its users. AbortionFinder has a new and improved ‘Find Funding & Support’ section that can help everyone get financial, travel, medical, legal, and/or emotional support before, during, or after an abortion. We’re proud to be a trusted resource for navigating abortion access in the US.
Federal Update

Statement on November 5 Election

Last month, Donald J. Trump won the 2024 US Presidential Election, securing a second term in the White House. We understand the fear, confusion, and uncertainty many are feeling about accessing sexual and reproductive health care. At Power to Decide, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone has the information and resources they need to get the care they so rightfully deserve.  To that end, we are committed to keeping our digital resources, including AbortionFinder.org and Bedsider.org, up to date to help people access critical information and essential services. Read the full statement from Power to Decide CEO and practicing OB-GYN, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley to learn more.

Congress Returns to Finalize Government Funding

On November 12, members of Congress made their return to Washington, DC with a primary focus on must pass legislation in the remaining months of the 118th Congress. This includes funding for fiscal year 2025 (FY25). After passing a short-term funding bill or continuing resolution (CR) in September, they now have until December 20 to finalize and pass appropriations bills to fund the government or pass another short-term funding package.

As negotiations continue on final funding packages, we must urge members of Congress to prioritize sexual and reproductive well-being programs in final spending packages. We urge you to contact your members of congress and tell them to support reproductive well-being in final spending packages.

State Updates

Voters in 7 out of 10 States Protect Abortion Access

There were several victories for abortion access through state ballot initiatives in the November 5 elections. Seven states —  Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada (must pass a second time), and New York — voted to protect or expand access to abortion by explicitly including abortion as a fundamental right or prohibiting discrimination based on pregnancy or pregnancy outcomes. In Arizona and Missouri, this means that the states’ previous abortion bans (15 weeks in Arizona and a total ban in Missouri) will be overturned. There will be a delay before most of these ballot measures go into effect, as legal challenges to the existing laws take place. In addition, there are no clinics providing abortion in Missouri. It will take some time before clinics are operational.

Ballot measures in Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota were defeated, meaning that the states’ current bans on abortion will stay in place for the foreseeable future.

As always, AbortionFinder.org is an important resource for the latest on abortion laws and providers around the country.
