Differing Shades of Shame in Substance Use Disorders
Wednesday, May 20 | noon-1 p.m. Central

Shame is a word often used by both patients and care providers in addressing substance use disorders. But there are differing shades of shame—with different implications for recovery. Join psychiatrist Kristen Schmidt, MD, to define and differentiate healthy and unhealthy aspects of shame that can either promote or impede recovery from substance use disorders. Dr. Schmidt will also discuss emerging evidence on the interaction between stigma and shame.

Learning Objectives
Distinguish among healthy shame, unhealthy shame, guilt and stigma
Explain how feelings related to shame can impact the treatment of substance use disorders and the recovery process
Describe how providers can use the principles of healthy and unhealthy shame to assist patients who are actively struggling with substance use disorders or in recovery
