A MESSAGE FROM ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL
BRENT J. COHEN
Last month, OJP hosted a forum focused on the epidemic of missing or murdered Black women and girls [ [link removed] ], bringing together survivors, advocates, journalists and government leaders to raise awareness of and build solutions to this ongoing crisis [ [link removed] ]. We were honored and humbled to hear directly from families of the missing or murdered, who have turned their incredible pain into advocacy for change.
Their experiences were a call-to-action for us all: we must do more to seek justice for and stem the tide of violence against Black women and girls. While the Justice Department has expanded its efforts through NamUs [ [link removed] ], the Ashanti Alert [ [link removed] ] and Amber Alert [ [link removed] ] programs, and other resources [ [link removed] ], the forum made clear that real, lasting change requires sustained commitment and coordination across all levels of government and community.
We closed out November with the National Conference on Youth Justice [ [link removed] ], our first such gathering in 13 years and the capstone of our yearlong celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act [ [link removed] ]. What made this conference so special was the direct involvement of young leaders in every element of the program, helping to ground every discussion in the perspectives and needs of our nation's young people.
Through OJJDP's Continuum of Care framework [ [link removed] ] and over $430 million [ [link removed] ] in funding this year, we're working to ensure that every young person has the support they need to thrive. At this pivotal moment for the field, now is the time to insist on a developmentally appropriate juvenile justice system that supports and empowers our kids to lead lives that are free from crime and violence.
