Amid the global crisis precipitated by the coronavirus, indigenous peoples are among the most severely affected yet most overlooked of populations. Many indigenous communities in Canada are remote, with little access to medical supplies or even hospitals. As such, without adequate and timely allocation of emergency resources, they are vulnerable to devastating outbreaks — as in La Loche, Saskatchewan.
“There are many longstanding disparities between Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous communities," Dr. Anna Banerji, an infectious disease specialist, told CTV News. "There are severe overcrowding in some of these communities, a lack of … water security, a lack of food security in these communities."
"The jurisdictional fight between provinces and the federal government, where both claim the other is responsible for services," according to a report by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), "more often than not leaves Indigenous people without any services."
"This patchwork of service," the report said, "is a direct result of colonialism."

In frigid February, the Mohawk of Tyendinaga and other First Nations blocked railways, stalling the shipment of food, fuel, and raw materials along some of Canada’s most important supply lines. The disruptors were in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en of B.C., who had built blockades of their own to stop the construction of a pipeline traversing B.C. from Dawson Creek to the port of Kitimat. The public in general, and environmental activists specifically, took due notice. But the undergirding point of contention reaches further and deeper into the chronicle of Canadian injustice. "It’s not over yet," said indigenous-resistance spokesperson Freda Huson. "The nation has stood up."

How much money has Jeff Bezos made since January? $25 billion. How many Amazon employees are infected? 800. How many have died from COVID-19? Seven. How many warehouses have been closed? In the U.S., just one. (And only because the state's governor ordered it to be closed.) Since this crisis began hundreds of the monopolist megacorporation's employees, underpaid and scared of infection, have staged walkouts to protest dangerous working conditions. Several who voiced concerns were fired, and one executive quit in protest over the firings. Workers are dying and losing their jobs — all so that their rich, comfortably self-isolated peers can get toilet paper without leaving the house. Amazon doesn't care about workers' lives. Amazon is profiting off death. #BoycottAmazon. Buy from local businesses that treat their workers with dignity — help everyday people resist Bezos' jackboot.
