Former CIR reporter Will Evans uncovered that Amazon’s obsession with speed has turned its warehouses into injury mills, and the rates of injury only intensified during times like Cyber Monday. Not only were Amazon’s injury rates far worse than the national average for the warehousing industry, but the company was deceptive about this problem.
The impact of our Amazon investigations are far-reaching and ongoing, including:
- Federal prosecutors and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration found unsafe working conditions at six warehouse locations. As part of the same investigation, OSHA cited Amazon for 14 recordkeeping violations.
- Amazon shareholders cited our reporting in their request for an independent audit into warehouse health and safety (though the proposal ultimately failed).
- California, New York, Minnesota, Washington, and Oregon passed laws prohibiting companies like Amazon from enforcing work quotas that prevent workers from taking bathroom breaks or doing their jobs safely. Some of the laws also empower workers to sue over unsafe quotas and any discipline they receive for not meeting them. Similar bills are in progress in other states, including Illinois and Massachusetts.
- In the wake of our investigations, US Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) released a damning report showing the extent of worker injury at Amazon, including how nearly half of warehouse employees suffered some form of injury during Prime Day week in 2019.
