“How to unlock UK growth once again: lessons from the past and pathways for the future”

RSVP Here!

You are invited to apply to attend the Ralph Harris Centenary Lecture, to be delivered on Monday 9 December by Tyler Goodspeed, former Acting Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors.

Tyler will address the question: “How to unlock UK growth once again – lessons from the past and pathways for the future”.

Ralph Harris – later Lord Harris of High Cross – would have been a hundred years old on 10 December. Please join us as we celebrate his life, legacy, and lasting contribution to the fight for economic freedom in Britain.

As the IEA’s general director from 1957 to 1988, Lord Harris was a pioneering figure in Britain’s free market movement. Alongside Arthur Seldon, the IEA’s first editorial director, he fought against a conventional wisdom which was deeply hostile to capitalism – but eventually won over a generation of opinion formers and policymakers to the principles of economic liberalism.

Tyler Goodspeed has a PhD in economics from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in history from Harvard University, and is currently a Kleinheinz Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He has published extensively on economic and financial history.

As acting chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisors, Tyler spearheaded the economic policy response to Covid-19 – the worst macroeconomic shock to hit the U.S. economy since the Great Depression. Ultimately, the United States experienced the shortest recession and fastest economic recovery in U.S. history.

The lecture will be chaired by Tom Clougherty, executive director & Ralph Harris fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs. It will also feature responses from – and conversation with – Kristian Niemietz, the IEA’s editorial director, and Christian Bjørnskov, professor of economics at Aarhus University and affiliated researcher at the Research Institute of Industrial Economics.

To RSVP, please do so here or email [email protected]
