Dear John,
World AIDS Day is 365 days a year at Equality Federation. Today, we honor the lives lost to the HIV/AIDS epidemic and build upon the legacy of champions who have laid the foundation for this work. As a gay man on PrEP, this day, always reminds me both how far we've come and how much work remains to realize the vision of ending this epidemic.
The election has left many of us feeling shaken and uncertain about the future. We are entering a period where Public Health and HIV services and prevention work will depend on state-level policy advocacy. Equality Federation is already working to develop support for our state partners to locally protect access to critical healthcare that LGBTQ+ communities impacted by HIV depend on to live and thrive.

There are currently 26 states with specific criminal penalties related to HIV. We have regranted over $167,000 to our partners to support their public health efforts with almost all funding going to HIV advocacy in the South. Thanks to funding partners like Gilead Compass at Emory University, Gilead Sciences, Merck, and ViiV healthcare, we have been able to deepen this work on a level we haven’t seen before.
Still, today the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black, Latina, and Indigenous trans women, fueled by systemic inequities and barriers to prevention, testing, and treatment, underscores the critical importance of our work.
With your support today, we’ll be able to do even more for our state-partners in 2025. [[link removed]]
Central to this work is the importance of following the leadership of people living with HIV (PLHIV), whose voices and experiences must guide our efforts. I’d be remiss to not mention the incredible work our partners have done at Freedom Oklahoma, FreeState Justice in Maryland, Silver State Equality in Nevada, Garden State Equality, Equality Ohio, PROMO in Missouri, Fair Wisconsin, Georgia Equality, and Arkansas Black Gay Men’s Forum. The mountains they’ve been able to move has been a testament to the power of our network.
Thank you for your support, and your shared commitment to end this epidemic, together.
With Gratitude,
