John,

'It was Parliament at its best'. After a five hour debate when MPs from all parties listened quietly to different deeply held views put forward in a compassionate and respectful way, the House of Commons voted in favour of legalising assisted dying in England and Wales.

News roundup

The finance deal struck at Cop29 does not come 'anywhere near' the level of need of countries bearing the brunt of climate change, and critically there is not enough clarity on how much will be grants, as opposed to loans, co-leader Carla Denyer MP said in the House of Commons, in a question to Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband.

Floods caused by Storm Bert, notably in Wales, the Midlands and South West, show why we need to accelerate climate action. Adrian Ramsay MP said MPs like new Tory leader Kim Badenoch who wanted to 'stop the drive to net zero' needed to explain to people with flooded homes why they considered climate action a luxury.

Green MPs have written to Foreign Secretary David Lammy to clarify the Government's position on the risk of genocide in Gaza. Highlighting the UK's obligation to prevent genocide under international law, Ellie Chowns MP asked what the Government needed to recognise and act on its obligation, given the huge number of deaths and dire humanitarian situation.

Government plans to reform back to work support have been heavily criticised. Speaking in the House of Commons, Sian Berry MP said young people must be consulted and able to shape new conditions on work or training and challenge plans to remove their benefits, as these will have a significant impact on their wellbeing and life chances.

Congratulations to Caroline Lucas who has been appointed co-President of the European Movement. She said the appointment alongside fellow former MP Dominic Grieve was an honour. "The prospect of Donald Trump in the White House should focus minds on the importance of being guided by our values, and on urgently rebuilding our relationship with the EU as the best way to ensure economic, security and climate resilience."

Greens in parliament

All four Green MPs supported the bill to legalise assisted dying. Speaking in a sometimes emotional debate, Sian Berry said she backed the bill as it meant someone in unbearable suffering from a terminal illness could peacefully plan an ending to their final months. She said the current legal situation makes it a prosecutable offence for anyone to advise or assist someone who wanted to end their lives. All Green MPs received a huge amount of correspondence from constituents on the vote. Speaking afterwards, Ellie Chowns said she was pleased the bill had passed this stage and could go forward to be scrutinised in much more detail. "The debate showed Parliament at it's best. This is a conversation we need to pursue in Parliament and in society as well."

Adrian Ramsay is a big supporter of animal rights. Here he is lending his support to Humane International's campaign to end the import and sale of fur in the UK.

It's a milestone win for Zane's Law, writes Campaigns coordinator Tom Scott. The London Assembly has passed a unanimous motion, brought by Green Assembly Member Zack Polanski, asking the Mayor to call on the Prime Minister to bring forward new legislation addressing the rising risk of leakage from toxic waste dumps. NATURE ACTION NOW Campaign: We ran two brilliant online events as part of our Nature Action Now campaign in November - one on cleaning up our rivers and another on whether the pledge to protect 30 per cent of land and sea by 2030 is still obtainable. You can watch 'Can We Get Nature Restoration Back on Track?' and 'How Do We Clean Up Our Rivers?', on our campaign platform 💚

Deputy leader Zack Polanski in front of a colourful wall.

It's been a tough week for Louise Haigh but the in-tray of new Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is certainly bulging. The former deputy London Mayor is highly regarded by transport campaigners for her work promoting the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) and safer cycling in the capital. Now, not only will she be in charge of nationalising the railways but she will be under huge pressure from airports to allow further expansion. Green Party Deputy leader Zack Polanski has some advice. "The Climate Change Committee have made it clear that airport expansion is incompatible with a liveable planet. Do the right thing."

In hope,

The Green Party 💚
