Hi, friend, I hope you’re doing well.
It’s been a couple weeks since I last reached out. Like many of us, I’ve taken some time to rest and reflect on the Election and the path forward for our neighbors, our party, and our democracy.
Election Night was definitely not the night we were hoping for and what lies ahead is scary, but I am so proud that together we were able to make IL-17 a bright spot on the map that I think can lead us forward. Not only were we able to hold this seat, we were able to more than double our margin of victory.
We did it because of YOU and your support. As I told you all year, in order to win, we needed to drive-up turnout in our cities, like Rockford and Peoria, AND persuade voters in our rural communities, like Freepot and Sterling. We did exactly that. In fact, our biggest increase in voters was in those rural communities and we were even able to flip rural McDonough County blue!
Look, friend, the forecast for the next four years can seem daunting. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a little discouraged, but just as I used to tell my neighbors when I was their TV meteorologist, the best thing you can do when a bad storm is coming is make a plan. Here’s mine:
1. I’m going to focus on the job my neighbors elected me to do. I am going to continue looking out for them and fight for good-paying, sustainable jobs, protect reproductive freedoms, and bring common-sense leadership to the climate crisis.
2. I’m going to push back on Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans’ extremism. We know that Project 2025 is on the horizon and I am going to fight like hell to make sure it is not passed into law.
3. I’m going to make sure that Democrats retake the House in 2026. I know it can feel like a long way off, but the clock is now ticking on holding this seat again and electing Democrats across the country, so we can elect a House that will be a check on Trump.
To be clear: I’m not asking you to start the work today. You’re tired. You’re frustrated. And maybe you’re scared. I get it. I’m feeling it all too. But I have to believe that our brightest days are still ahead of us. Let’s keep the hope and thank you again.
