In honor of #16DaysOfActivism, which began on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25) and concludes on Human Rights Day (December 10), Muslims for Progressive Values has launched a 16 day social media campaign to raise awareness about gender based violence (GBV), a universal problem plaguing communities around the world. The United Nations recently released data which showed that every 10 minutes in 2023, a partner or family member intentionally killed a women or a girl. The report also showed that the most dangerous place for a woman to be is… in their own home. This is one of the reasons that nearly 10 years ago, MPV launched the #ImamsForShe Program, which provides support and solidarity to Imams, Muslim leaders, and Islamic scholars who advocate for gender equality and against gender based violence. Over the years, our Champion Imams have given khutbahs to tens of thousands of individuals across Burundi, the DRC, and Rwanda on the impermissibility of FGM, child marriage, human trafficking, and gender based violence in Islamic tradition. They’ve also trained hundreds of women and girls on their right to quality education, financial independence, and bodily autonomy, providing them with the tools and language they need to defend their rights. Considering that GBV remains one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world, programs like #ImamsForShe are needed now more than ever. That’s why, in conjunction with our #16DaysOfActivism Campaign, we are also launching a fundraiser to expand our #ImamsForShe programming across East Africa. We’re asking you to help us raise $5,000 during these #16DaysOfActivism to expand access to our educational workshops and #ClubsForShe program and train even more Champion Imams to directly combat GBV in their communities. If you want to learn more about the #ImamsForShe program before you make your donation, we invite you to watch this video from Imam Khalfan, the director of #ImamsForShe. |
