During the 2024 presidential election season, pundits, politicians and the electorate would often mispronounce Vice President Kamala Harris' first name. Atiya Irvin-Mitchell wrote about having spent much of her life correcting (or not correcting) people's pronunciation of her name. Part of her message: If people can learn to say Russian names like Fyodor Dostoevsky and made-up names like Daenerys Targaryen, they can learn her Arabic name.

In a study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh, Black birthers are more likely to gain or retain weight after pregnancy compared to their white counterparts. The study confirms what local Black doulas and other birth workers have experienced and witnessed.
In some Pittsburgh suburbs, about 50% of high school students have reported feelings of hopelessness. One solution? Adding more community assets like health services and transportation options, a study finds.
