For the upcoming legislative session, we intend to help keep you informed not only of what is going on in the session overall but especially to keep you informed on what our Tarrant County elected officials are up to.
While the session hasn't begun, bills are being filed by our representatives. We wanted to begin informing you about how our Tarrant County representatives are doing by telling you about a few bills that they have already filed.
HB 1427 by Rep. Schatzline would keep the state, counties, cities, etc from denying benefits to private schools on the basis that they are religious institutions. Currently, entities can discriminate against educational institutions on the basis of religious affiliation. This bill would fix that, so that religious schools will be treated on an equal playing field and not discriminated against just for being religious.
HB 166 by Rep. Capriglione would expand the crime of endangering a child, elderly person, or disabled person to include fentanyl. Currently, it is considered endangerment for someone to manufacture, possess, or introduce methamphetamine into someone's body in the presence of a child, elderly person, or disabled person. By adding fentanyl to the list, this bill would help to protect Texans and crack down on fentanyl production and distribution.
As of the writing of this newsletter, Reps. Tinderholt, McQueeney, Lowe, and Cook have not pre-filed any bills. This isn't abnormal, as the session doesn't begin for over a month. Once more bills are filed, we will be here to tell you about them!
