Unfortunately wonderful encounters like this with certain species may become rarer in the future. Many bird populations—including that of the Red-headed Woodpecker—are on the decline. In fact, North America has lost more than one in four of its birds since 1970. That’s in less than a single human lifetime. And if we don’t act, it will only get worse.

At a time when birds are already struggling, climate change poses a massive threat to the future for many of the birds we love.
