Welcome to the final newsletter of November

Where has this year gone?

I've been all over this week, from visiting the East Midlands with the Department of Health & Social Care, to closing the debate on the Tobacco and Vapes bill, to lantern parades and brick factories back in Gorton and Denton.
HIGHLIGHTS

🧱 Wienerberger Denton

It was amazing to be invited to Weinerberger here in Denton, to see their factory that produces over 1.2 million bricks a week.

It was fascinating to tour the facility, learn how the process of brick making has evolved, and to discuss how brick making will evolve into the future, as we move towards net zero.

The factory produces a wide variety of bricks, including producing 52,000 custom bricks for the new Coronation Street Set!

🎄 Dane Bank Latern Parade and switch on

A lovely evening spent at the Denton lantern parade and Christmas Tree switch on!

It’s brilliant to see both community groups working so closely together, and to see the local community support them in such big numbers. Lyle and I had a great time. Just sorry I had to get the train to That London before the tree was lit, but it looks great on the photos the Councillors sent. ☃️

🚭 Tobacco and Vapes Bill

On Tuesday it was my pleasure to close the debate on the, now passed, Tobacco and Vapes Bill.

The measures contained within the bill will protect us all from the harms of smoking, and most importantly, protect our children and the most vulnerable for decades to come.

We’re building a smoke-free generation, eliminating the scourge of childhood nicotine addiction, protecting our NHS, and reducing health inequalities across the nation, so that where will live, doesn’t determine how long we live.

🎗️ World AIDS Day

With World AIDS Day happening on the 1st of December, it was my honour to come before the House in Westminster Hall, and speak at the first dedicated debate on HIV and AIDS in this Parliament.

Myself and the government are committed to rolling out our HIV & AIDS action plan, smashing the stigma around the disease, improving awareness and uptake of testing in Black and minority ethnic communities, and tackling HIV & AIDS across the world through our commitment to The Global Fund.

🩺 Medical Devices Legsation Committee debate

On Tuesday I led the debate in the Third Delegated Legislation Committee, on changes to the regulation on medical devices.

Many of you will notice that this isn’t in the House of Commons Chamber, this is what is called a Delegated Legislation Committee, which is where groups of MPs meet to review detailed laws made under existing Acts of Parliament. These committees debate and approve changes like this one but cannot amend them.
