JOHN,
On November 29, 1947, the United Nations voted to split up Palestine and displace Palestinians from their land, transferring rich agricultural land and important seaports to new immigrants and violating the UN’s own charter on self-determination. This marked the first stage of the Nakba, with Zionist militias ethnically cleansing 750,000 Palestinians. The ethnic cleansing, apartheid, and oppression of the Palestinian people has lasted for over 77 years.
Thirty years later on November 29, 1977, the UN called for the creation of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People to recognize the fundamental and inalienable rights of Palestinians. Now the vast majority of member countries in the UN have voted to end Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories and end the escalated genocide that Israel’s government has carried out over the past year.
The U.S. continues to block UN resolutions for a ceasefire and Palestinian sovereignty, including measures to make Palestine a full voting member of the UN. However, in September of this year, Palestine was seated among United Nations “member states” for the first time, not able to vote on resolutions but able to introduce them.
In September, 124 UN member countries voted for a resolution introduced by UN Palestinian representatives, which demands Israel’s immediate military withdrawal from occupied Palestine as required by international law that affirms Palestinians’ right to self-determination in their homeland. This widely supported resolution also demands the right of return and reparations for Palestinians (also required by international law), and calls on UN Member States like the U.S. to comply with international law by implementing sanctions and withholding weapons and assistance to Israel.
Clearly, the United States is violating international law by continuing to support Israel, even after the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. It’s up to us as residents of the United States to continue to push our government to end its illegal support of Israel.
To honor the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, please add your name as a grassroots co-signer of Palestine’s United Nations resolution, which demands the immediate withdrawal of the Israeli military from the occupied Palestinian territories, the right of return and reparations for Palestinians, and sanctions and arms embargoes to end Israel’s atrocities.
We will never give up in our demands to save lives and secure human dignity for Palestinians and all people.
In love and solidarity,
Rashida
