John, we’re only a few weeks out from the election and now grappling with how we will respond to the threats the Trump administration has promised. If you’re feeling scared or angry, trust me, I’m there with you. But let me tell you, after the number of sign-ups to run for office we’ve seen in recent weeks, I have a renewed sense of hope.

We started Run for Something in 2017 after Trump was elected, and in that first year, 15,000 people signed up. Now, fast forward to 2024, in just two weeks, over 10,000 people have signed up to run for office and take a stand in their communities.

This unprecedented turnout just goes to show how crucial our work is here at Run for Something. Together, we have the power to turn our anger into real change where it matters most – because just like how bad ideas (ahem, Project 2025) start at the state and local level, so do great ones.

But in order to turn these sign-ups into winning candidates, we need resources to ensure we can support these candidates in their journey and fight against Trump in cities, states and across the country. John, every person is taking this tough election news differently. Some grieve, some are angry, some want someone to blame – no one wanted to feel the way we did in 2016 ever again, especially now that we know what lies ahead.

I stared at the screen figuring out how to talk to each of you, to tell you that, whatever you are feeling, I am sad and numb and tired, too.

But then I saw something in our team reports:

Over 600 people signed up to run for office just yesterday.

That’s what’s giving me hope today. More than 600 people woke up (or never went to sleep!), saw the election results, and even in their sadness, said, “I’m in, I’m ready to fight.”

We’re going to be there for those leaders and the 160,000+ others in our candidate pipeline as they consider how they can fight for their communities by running for office. They’re not disengaging, and neither will we.
