A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

*_Visit to Welbeck Primary _*

I was pleased to visit Welbeck Primary School as part of International School Meals week on Friday 22nd November.  I enjoyed meeting with pupils and talking about their school with them. This was a good opportunity to meet the headteacher and discuss plans to expand the school and how the council can support them in achieving that goal.

*_Visit to Tramlink _*

The Council’s Chief Executive, Sajeeda Rose and I visited Tramlink on 25 November. I was given a tour of the site and spoke with our partners Tramlink and NET, discussing various issues such as the recent strike, ensuring that NET staff are treated fairly and the future opportunities for the tram network. The trams are a vital part of our public transport network, and it’s key that we support them as much as we can. The highlight of the day was scoring 35% on the tram simulator and still outscoring Sajeeda and Martin!

*_JUNO _**_W_**_omen’s _**_A_**_id_*_ _*_-_**_ Turning Nottingham Orange_*

I was proud to take part in JUNO Women’s Aid “Turning Nottingham Orange” event alongside Executive councillors and the Corporate Leadership team on 25 November. This event marked International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and was part of the global campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Nottingham Central Library

Central Library celebrates one year since opening

It has now been one year since Nottingham's new Central Library opened it's doors in November 2023. During that time it has had:


* More than 292,774 visitors
* Over 660 events
* Over 4,500 people signed up to attend events
* Over 153,597 books have been borrowed
* Over 43,330 hours of computer usage logged

The library is hosting a 1st Birthday Bash to celebrate this milestone. People are invited for a party in the children’s area at the library on Saturday 30 November from 10am to 2pm.

There will be games in our immersive room, crafts & board games in the creative lab, plus party games with prizes up for grabs and some take-home gifts.

Rough sleeper

Winter support in place again for rough sleepers in Nottingham

Nottingham’s extra support measures for rough sleepers have kicked in this week in the cold weather – providing enough shelter for anyone otherwise sleeping on the street as the temperatures drop.

Nottingham City Council and its partners offer a range of support all year round, which is stepped up between October and April with extra safeguards in place when temperatures fall below zero.

Help available this winter includes:


* Beds in specialist accommodation.
* Dozens of daily opportunities for rough sleepers to get a free hot drink, meal or hot shower.
* Everyone gets an offer of a warm place to stay when the temperature falls to zero degrees Centigrade or below; when this happens 5 shared sites across the city will open offering emergency  spaces for anyone in genuine need.
* Hot meals being delivered to emergency spaces from voluntary organisations, Guru Nanak’s Mission, SAFE and Food for all.
* A variety of accommodation available, mainly within in existing services but based upon the individual and their needs.
* The Emmanuel House winter night shelter running until April.
* Our Street Outreach Teams out daily from 5.30am talking to rough sleepers and offering them accommodation.

Council House orange

Nottingham supports International Day of elimination of violence against women

The Nottingham Council House was lit orange on Monday (25 November) to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The aim of the day is to raise awareness that violence against women and girls, with globally, an estimated 736 million women — almost one in three — have been subjected to some sort of violence at least once in their life.

Juno Women’s Aid is the largest domestic abuse organisation in Nottingham and one of the largest in the UK. They work with women, children, and teens who have been affected by domestic abuse in Ashfield, Broxtowe, Gedling, Nottingham City, and Rushcliffe.

Council Tax Support scheme

Have your say on proposed changes to Council Tax Support

Nottingham City Council is consulting on future options for its Council Tax Support scheme which helps households on low incomes with their Council Tax bill. 

Around 19% of households in Nottingham are in receipt of Council Tax Support with the scheme costing over £30 million a year to operate. 

The proposed changes to the scheme will affect all working age (under state pension age) households. They do not affect the Council Tax support for pensioner households, the rules for which are controlled by Central Government. 

If agreed, the revised scheme would begin in April 2025.
