Honoring a Visionary This Thanksgiving: Peter Christ's Legacy Lives On |
Dear [Name], This Thanksgiving, as we reflect on all we have to be thankful for—especially the people who shape our lives and inspire us to do better—I need to share some news that's deeply personal for all of us at the Law Enforcement Action Partnership. Peter Christ, co-founder of LEAP, passed away on November 4th, 2024. For those of you who had the privilege of knowing him, Peter was a force of nature—a vibrant, independent thinker who dedicated his life to challenging what he saw as the greatest flaw in policing: the War on Drugs. His visionary idea of uniting law enforcement professionals to speak out for a reformed drug policy gave birth to Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, which later grew into the broader mission of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership. |
Peter is the reason we are here today. His courage to confront injustice, his boundless energy, and his ability to inspire others shaped the very foundation of our organization. He touched the lives of countless speakers, staff, and supporters like you, and he gave voice to what was once considered a radical idea. That idea has since gained widespread acceptance, thanks in large part to Peter’s tireless advocacy. |
His impact is immeasurable. His 2012 viral video, "Retired Police Captain Demolishes the War on Drugs," which remains one of our greatest tools for spreading awareness and our most-watched piece of media of all time, opened doors for media opportunities and meaningful conversations we never thought possible. Peter also received the Drug Policy Alliance's H.B. Spear Award for his unique balance of enforcement and compassion, reflecting the principles that guide our mission to this day. |
We at LEAP are incredibly grateful for the community Peter helped build, which includes each of you. Your support and dedication have allowed us to carry forward his vision of justice, compassion, and accountability, amplifying our message and sustaining our work. As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, we give thanks not only for Peter’s life but also for you—our supporters, donors, and allies—who have carried his legacy forward. You have made it possible for LEAP to continue advocating for policies rooted in fairness, transparency, and humanity, and we hope you take pride in the impact you’ve helped create. This is a powerful reminder of how influential one person can be and how much stronger we are when we come together. This Thanksgiving, we encourage you to hold close the people who inspire you, as Peter inspired all of us. His life is a testament to how one person, with the support of many, can create lasting change. Thank you for being part of this community, for believing in our work, and for helping us honor Peter’s memory by continuing the fight for justice. With deep gratitude, Lt. Diane Goldstein (Ret.) Executive Director |
