Proposed laws aim to create a smoke-free generation
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will ban the sale of cigarette for those currently aged 15 or under, aiming to create a smokefree generation. The legislation also gives government the powers to extend smoking bans to outdoor spaces like playgrounds and school premises. The government has said that this will not include hospitality spaces like pub gardens.
The bill also seeks to regulate vaping by banning vape advertising and giving government powers to regulate flavours and packaging. Disposable vapes are set to be banned from mid-2025, and a tax on vape liquids will take effect in 2026. These measures aim to curb both smoking and youth vaping as part of broader public health efforts.

Tobacco ban for future generations moves forward despite former PM's absence
The UK Parliament has advanced a bill prohibiting the sale of tobacco to individuals born after 2009, aiming to establish a "smoke-free generation." The legislation passed its second reading with significant support, though Rishi Sunak, who originally proposed the measure as Prime Minister, was notably absent for the vote. His successor, Kemi Badenoch, opposed the bill.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended the legislation, dismissing criticisms of overreach by asserting that addiction undermines personal freedom. The bill also includes powers to tackle marketing of vapes to prevent nicotine addiction among young people.

Farage skips vote on smokefree generation to host GB news
The UK’s Tobacco and Vapes Bill, aimed at preventing younger generations from ever legally purchasing tobacco and curbing youth vaping, cleared its second reading in Parliament with overwhelming support. Notably, Nigel Farage, a vocal critic of the proposals, skipped the vote to host his GB News show. While Farage dismissed the debate as unnecessary given the bill’s wide support, critics have called out his absenteeism as emblematic of his disengagement from parliamentary duties.

Raids uncover thousands in illicit tobacco in Blackpool
Lancashire Police, in collaboration with trading standards officers, confiscated over £30,000 worth of illicit tobacco during targeted operations in Blackpool. Raids on premises in Bond Street and Lytham Road resulted in the seizure of thousands of cigarette packets and hundreds of tobacco pouches.
John Blackledge, the council's director of community and environmental services, praised the operation's success, reinforcing the authority's zero-tolerance stance on illegal tobacco sales. He affirmed ongoing efforts to disrupt such activities and promised strict enforcement against those involved.
